About CORTIMENT. ®MMX® CORTIMENT is a locally acting corticosteroid in a novel, patented, oral tablet formulation, which utilizes MMX® multi-matrix technology and is designed to result in the controlled release and distribution of budesonide throughout the length of the colon.

What is MMX budesonide?

Abstract. Objective Budesonide MMX is a novel oral formulation of budesonide that uses Multi-Matrix System (MMX) technology to extend release to the colon. This study compared the efficacy of budesonide MMX with placebo in patients with active, mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis (UC).

How long can you take CORTIMENT?

The recommended adult dose to treat a flare-up of Crohn’s disease is 9 mg taken once daily in the morning, preferably after breakfast, for up to 8 weeks. Finish all this medication, even if you have started to feel better.

How long does it take for CORTIMENT to start working?

You’ll usually feel better after a week or two if you’re taking rectal steroids. If you’re taking intravenous steroids, you may feel better after few days, but it can take up to 10 days after starting treatment. You may experience side effects much sooner, see the section below on Side effects.

High doses or long-term use of steroid medicine can lead to thinning skin, easy bruising, changes in body fat (especially in your face, neck, back, and waist), increased acne or facial hair, menstrual problems, impotence, or loss of interest in sex.

How long does budesonide MMX take to work?

Two open-label studies (run-in phase of randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled maintenance studies) investigated the efficacy of budesonide 9 mg/day during 6 weeks. In the first study, 46 patients (96%) achieved clinical remission within 2–30 (mean 6.4) days, with marked improvements in stool consistency.

Cortiment tablets should be used with caution in patients with infections, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, peptic ulcer, glaucoma or cataracts or with a family history of diabetes or glaucoma or with any other condition where the use of glucocorticoids may have unwanted effects.

Are there any studies on the effect of cortiment?

There is no data on the effect of Cortiment on fertility in humans. There were no effects on fertility in rats after treatment with budesonide. No studies on the effects of Cortiment on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed.

What are the side effects of budesonide MMX?

No evidence versus active comparators is published at this time. The summary of product characteristics states that the most common adverse effects of budesonide MMX are nausea, upper abdominal pain, headache, insomnia, altered mood, decreased blood cortisol, influenza and viral upper respiratory tract infection.
