On April 24, the Moore School honored five alumni and a former faculty member during the 14th annual Business Leadership Dinner. Find out who received the 2009 Distinguished Alumni and Service Awards.


Scholarship Established in Memory of Lindsey Cushing (BS '08)

Lindsey Blair Cushing (BS '08) passed away peacefully on February 27, 2009, at the age of 23 after a courageous four-year battle with kidney cancer. Diagnosed at the end of her freshman year, Lindsey had a zest for life and made every day the best that it could be without dwelling on her illness.


Charity Garris (BS' 97) and Barbara Ryan (MACC '92) were recognized as two of Columbia's 20 under 40 awardees by The State newspaper in Columbia for 2009. Charity Garris currently is director of Service Excellence at Palmetto Health Richland. Barbara Ryan is a tax partner and leader of the South Carolina tax practice of Grant Thornton LLP.


Matthew Johnson (BS ’98, MACC '99) was recently featured in the Atlanta Business Chronicle's 2008 "Up and Comers 40 Under 40." The group of 40 professionals, chosen for making a difference in business and the community, work together to identify areas of need within Atlanta and develop workable solutions.

James "J.J." Messervy (BS '04) was named among the top business achievers at the annual 40 Under 40 awards event sponsored by the Charleston Regional Business Journal on May 19. Messervy, 27, serves as a consultant at Jarrard, Nowell & Russell, LLC, in Charleston, SC, where he provides property tax advice and assists with income tax preparation and captive insurance audits. He is also auditor-elect for Dorchester County and will take office in July.
