A Founder’s Daughter

Dorothy Kaplan Duncan is the daughter of Founder Jack Kaplan. She joined fraters at the Kansas City Centennial Dinner and shared a few of her memories. Fittingly, she spoke at an event honoring the Founders. Her father used to go to Founders Day dinners in New York and never missed one. He always spoke at them, which he loved to do. And always was asked to participate in other cities as well.

Dorothy recalled her dad going to one of the Sammy dinners when she was in high school. As a proud father, he passed her picture around the dinner without her knowledge. He told her about it the next day and she was mortified. To her chagrin, she did get a few phone calls from the dinner attendees.

She fondly recalled participating in a few fraternity functions. One event was a hayride into the middle of Times Square. An event she had never heard of anyone doing before. These activities gave her a new appreciation for her father’s Fraternity.

A beaming smile spread across her face as the Centennial Video shared how Sigma Alpha Mu impacted the lives of many fraters. She shares in that appreciation and was touched by her father’s memory. Dorothy has generously started a fund in her father’s name as part of the Centennial Campaign.

It had been many years since she attended her last Sammy event. She now plans on attending the New York City Founders Day event on November 14, 2009.
