Take pink flamingoes, pink feather boas, pink water bottles, pink everything--madness you say? Along with a few diamond tiaras, many excited yells, ringing bells, and a very hoarse foundation staff--it's just a typical day during the Phi Mu Foundation's annual phonathon. 6000 calls, and over $60,000 raised at a cost of 10 cents per dollar raised.

One of the women involved in the phonathon says, "During the event we call every active and recent lapsed donor as well long-lapsed and non-donors. Starting with our fall kick-off these women are hearing from us in several ways – but all at arms length. The phonathon gives a chance to connect with them directly and thank them for their amazing support."

The organization realized this the past year's fundraising efforts proved to be a little more difficult that previous years, with an increased goal and a difficult economic climate. As the foundation neared the close of their fiscal year and with over $30,000 left to raise in order to fully fund the leadership programs an additional, intense, year-end electronic strategy was implemented to help achieve the overall goal. Through their largest and most significant e-campaign in the organizations history, Beta Theta Pi Foundation was able to acquire nearly 40 new donors and raise nearly $38,000. From 233 donors they were able to raise $18,000 over the original Annual Fund goal.

The Pansy Patch encourages sisters to share their thoughts and thanks with one another through Foundation giving. For every $5 donation, the Foundation places a special hand-written pansy die-cut on the walls of their Convention hotel. If an honoree attends convention she receives a pansy sticker to wear indicating that she's been honored through the Pansy Patch. If the honoree is not at convention, the donor and her honoree are included in the master donor/honoree list in the foundation publication and on the foundation website. At a cost of .37 cents per dollar raised Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation was able to raise $13,000 while significantly increasing their collegiate donor number by 83%.

The Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation created a microsite within their own website and distributed the following message "Think of the simple pleasures you enjoy. Would you trade the good feeling you get from your simple pleasure for the great feeling you would get by making a donation in the same amount to help a sister in need?

In correlation to one of the organizations core values of LOVE and the Valentine's day holiday the above concept was presented to Theta alumnae to prompt them to "show their Theta love" by donating the monetary value of their simple pleasure to the friendship fund, the Foundation fund to support sisters experiencing severe financial distress, catastrophic illness, natural disaster, and urgent family crisis. The project touched each and every living Theta member either through email, or mail. In the Foundation's second year in soliciting non-donors, 150 new donors were inspired to give, helping to raise over $33,000 for the Friendship Fund. This effort by the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation sisters is representative of the finest in alumnae spirit and support.

This organization realized an opportunity to reengage a former board member and energize several potential donors who lived in close proximity. The entire cost of a private event for several donors was underwritten by the former board member, including a chartered flight to Lexington, VA, private tour of the Kappa Alpha National Headquarters, a catered private dinner, and a meeting with several Foundation staff. The event raised over $200,000 in unrestricted money with ZERO cost per dollar raised. The event was successful in re-engaging a former board member, who is ready to put together another trip.

This organization realized that of the 117 members of their planned giving society the average age per member was only 45 years old. From there the appeal was simple. Use existing members to tell their stories and utilize the best piece of real estate in the alumni publication; the KA Journal. The 1865 Trust grew from an average of 8 new members per year since 1993 to 11 new members in the year since the inception of the new program. The appeal has raised over 1.5 million dollars in new estate pledges with a cost basis of less that ½ of one cent per dollar raised. Members of the 1865 Trust through their own testimonies remember the main reason why KA is so important to them, and why they decided to leave a lasting gift to Kappa Alpha Order. These articles strengthen their already solid relationship.

This year's winning piece was a DVD entitled "Our Philanthropy is not only what we do; it's who we are." Since 1992, Zeta alumnae and collegians have been promoting breast cancer awareness and education on college campuses and communities throughout the country. After this philanthropy video was introduced at our national convention, over 80% of our chapters indicated that they used it for recruitment during the 2008-2009 school year. Packaged with important facts and presented in a fresh manner, the video stresses the important role that education and awareness play in the fight against breast cancer. The philanthropy round is one of Zeta's strongest and they have seen an increased rate of women returning since this video was introduced.

Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation

This year's Best Public Relations Effort award recognizes the efforts of what began with one alumnae chapter. The Zeta Tau Alpha Think Pink campaign began with a partnership between the Northern Virginia Alumnae chapter and the Washington Redskins but has spread to stadiums and arenas across the country. On October 12th, the 10th anniversary of the partnership was celebrated in a big way with the distribution of over 42,000 pink ribbons. Announcers, players, fans, staff, and even the family of the team's owner were spotted in the ribbons. Tanya Snyder, the wife of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder was one of Zeta's most involved volunteers in the distribution of the ribbons. The message of breast cancer awareness is still spreading and the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation deserves our recognition for their efforts to keep the momentum strong.

Best Use of a Foundation Grant for a Fraternity/Sorority Project or Program

Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation

Zeta Tau Alpha saw a need for an in depth program dealing with hazing and risk reduction in new member education and chapter development. The Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation provided a grant to cover the total program cost. Zeta leaders took ample time, as well as human and financial resources to develop My Sister, My Responsibility, utilizing industry leaders in hazing, risk management, alcohol education, and group development. The result has been a measured reduction in reported cases of hazing and standards violations. Quoting a chapter member who has been through and teaches the program, "This program has helped to create positive change in our chapter, I'm not sure what would have happened to us without it".

Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation

Educating members about their educational foundation is something that all organizations strive to keep as a top priority and the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation is no different. The AGD Foundation had an opportunity to participate in the Fraternity's regional leadership conferences held in Dallas and Atlanta. Of the 330 members who attend, collegians make up the majority of the audience at these events. Members were encouraged through a Foundation table at the regional event to provide their name and cell phone number for a chance to win a basket of Alpha Gamma Delta merchandise. 12 individuals were selected at random to be "texted" during the event. Testimonials, sent via text message were read at random during the program. As excitement as to whom would be the next to receive a text spread through the conference those who approached the microphone to read their text helped develop an increased awareness of the Foundation's work and importance. A survey sent after the program found that 98% of attendees agreed to having an increased awareness about the mission of the Foundation.

Delta Tau Delta Foundation

The winner for Best New Development Idea welcomed the Fraternity's sesquicentennial anniversary with an opportunity to make a major and long-term impact. As a result of learning and reviewing some of the best practices in the Greek fundraising industry the Delta Tau Delta Foundation came up with the Legacy Board Postcard campaign. For every $10 donated at the Karnea celebration donors received a special postcard that was designed in house. Once they were addressed to other friends/mentees/brothers, the Foundation mailed the postcards from the Bethany, West Virginia Post office, right around the corner from the founder's house. By the end of the Karnea celebration, the Delta Tau Delta Foundation had raised over $102,000 for the museum and archives fund. With a total of 249 donors and an average gift of $409 the development idea engaged both alumni and undergraduates in a very special way.
