It's All for the Kids! Even the Grown Up Ones!

As is the custom every May, El Segundo golfers hit the greens at the Rio Hondo Golf Course for the 21st annual "Strokes of Genius" Golf Tournament. On Friday, May 8th, under sunny skies, six Laker Girls greeted golfers and assisted with check-in at this sold-out event. ESEF's golf tournament sponsors make the "Strokes of Genius" possible every year with special thanks to Chevron and Bank of Manhattan for being this year's title sponsors.

Often held the first week in May, "Strokes of Genius" is the longest-standing and one of the most popular fundraising events held by the ESEF. This year golfers received a jacket with their entry and enjoyed 18 holes accompanied by lunch, dinner, and raffle prizes. Former ESEF board member Susan Johnson walked away with the biggest raffle prize of the day: a 40-inch LCD TV. Thanks to each and every participant, sponsor, and raffle prize donor who made 2009 a huge success! Your support helped us bring in close to $18,000 for the Foundation!

Kids Day International™ is worldwide event held in communities across the globe and is dedicated to children's health, safety, and environmental awareness. With sponsors across the city, El Segundo's event was held on Saturday, May 16th at Body Doc Healing Center. Kids got fingerprinted for free by the El Segundo Police Department and had the opportunity to meet "Arthur" from the K-9 Unit. The Fire Department had a fire truck on display, and firemen taught fire safety tips to the children. Free health screenings, scoliosis checks, and important information about child safety and disease prevention were available as well as electronics recycling, kids yoga demonstrations, balloons, snacks, jumpies, and a Ukulele performance.

A silent auction and raffle, with prizes available every half hour, benefited the Foundation; and former LA Raider Greg Townsend signed autographs. It was a well attended fun-filled day of free activities with something for the whole family. In all, Kids Day raised $3,500 for the Foundation.

El Segundo's Automobile Driving Museum hosted the Foundation's second annual "Car People for Education" Car Show on Saturday, May 30th. Guests of all ages enjoyed perusing more than 80 vintage and classic cars in competition for first and second place in ten different classes including: early vintage, hot rods, customs, surf wagons, and late model sports cars. Former USC and NFL football player Anthony Davis served as honorary head judge for the competition.

El Segundo residents took home awards in several categories, including first place winners Jim Kelley in the Surf Wagon class for his 1934 Ford Woodie and Bill Young in the Sports Car - Post 1975 class with his 2005 Ford GT. More than half of the cars entered in the Car Show this year were owned by local residents, and many out-of-towners came to El Segundo to attend the show.

Special awards were also given for Best of
Show, Peoples Choice, and ESEF Sponsors Choice. Winners in these categories were: Peoples Choice - Dan Horwood (Los Angeles) for his 1968 Jaguar E-Type Roadster; Sponsors Choice - Robert Miller (Redondo Beach) for his 1968 Camaro SS; and Best of Show - Gus Ludwig (Manhattan Beach) for his 1954 Jaguar XK140 FHC.

The Car Show raised almost $4,000 for the Foundation, which is more than double last year's event. Special thanks to Title Sponsor - Servicon and Event Sponsor - Inner Space Constructors as well as the Automobile Driving Museum for hosting this favorite event and offering access to the Museum in which attendees could view its multimillion-dollar automobile collection dating back to 1904.

Many thanks to every participant, donor, sponsor, and volunteer at all of ESEF's spring events. Your efforts are helping us reach our goal to raise $450,000 this year!
