Mitchell Physics Buildings Dedication
Texas A&M University dedicated the George P. Mitchell '40 Physics Building and the George P. and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Institute
for Fundamental Physics and Astronomy on Dec. 4. The buildings, located in the northeast quadrant of campus, are connected by a crosswalk and provide more than 197,000 square feet of floor space. Construction started in 2006, and the finished structures have been hailed as permanent showpieces for quality architecture and focal points of the Texas A&M campus.

A&M Ranks In 'Open Doors' Top 20
Texas A&M University ranks 16th in the nation in the latest "Open Doors" report of institutions with the most international students. The new "Open Doors" report is based on the 2008-09 annual survey published by the Institute of International Education with support from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The number of international students at colleges and universities in the U.S. increased by 8 percent to an all-time high of 671,616 for the 2008-09 academic year. Texas A&M also had its highest total ever, with 4,558 students representing 128 countries.

Commencement and Commissioning
Commencement ceremonies on the College Station campus for the fall semester of 2009 will be Dec. 18 and
19 in Reed Arena. Dr. Dudley Herschbach is this year's Commencement Convocation speaker. Herschbach won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1986 and is a physics professor at A&M. He is Texas A&M's third Nobel laureate in the University's history. The Association will extend its hours to 7 p.m. on Dec. 18, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 19 to serve families in town for graduation. Commencement for graduates of Texas A&M University at Galveston will be at 9 a.m. Dec. 19 at the Moody Gardens Convention Center.

Elephant Walk
The tradition of Elephant Walk continued Nov. 24. Now 83 years old, the custom of senior classmates joining together for a final walk around campus started with the Class of 1926. As seniors, they made the first symbolic pass around the school's grounds to signify the end of their time on campus. Since then, through support from The Association of Former Students, the walk has continued to be a way for seniors to gather, reminisce and say goodbye. This year, former first lady Barbara Bush was the keynote speaker, encouraging students to welcome the future. "My advice to you is to look at the uncertainty as exciting," she said.

President's Meritorious Service Awards
The 2009 President's Meritorious Service Awards were presented Dec. 1 by Interim University President Dr. R. Bowen Loftin '71 to 25 outstanding staff employees and one outstanding team for their service to the University. Individuals and teams are chosen annually for this award by nomination and an anonymous committee appointed by the President. The Association of Former Students co-sponsors the award program.
