win $100,000 for his organization, Wheelchairs for Iraqi Kids. Blauser started Wheelchairs for Iraqi Kids in 2005 after being told of disabled Iraqi children pulling themselves along the ground. Blauser asked how he could help, and now four years later, his organization has given more than 600 pediatric wheelchairs to Iraqi families. Blauser went to Iraq as a civilian contractor, but has since quit his job to focus full-time on Wheelchairs for Iraqi Kids. Blauser said the prize money would buy 285 more wheelchairs. Voting is unlimited and ends Nov. 19. Blauser and his story have been featured in Texas Aggie magazine. He is also highlighted at the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center in an exhibit that shows Aggies making a difference around the world.
Flags Lowered
To Honor Borlaug
Flags were flown at half-staff throughout the state Oct. 6 in honor of the late Dr. Norman E. Borlaug. Borlaug, a Nobel laureate and distinguished professor of international agriculture at Texas A&M University, died Sept. 12 in Dallas at age 95. A public memorial was held at Oct. 6 in Rudder Auditorium. Eulogies were given by U.S. Secretary of Defense Dr. Robert M. Gates, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, and others. Borlaug was remembered as a man who "built armies of agricultural workers" throughout the world to combat hunger, Gates said. Borlaug received the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for developing high-yielding crops to prevent famine in the developing world.

Texas Armed Service Scholarship Program
A new Texas law created the Armed Service Scholarship Program to provide $10,000 annual scholarships for 185 students. In return, each student must complete four years of ROTC training, graduate within five years of admission, and commit to four years of service as a commissioned officer in any branch of the service or as a member of the Texas Army or Air Force National Guard. Sen. Steve Ogden (R-Bryan) carried the bill in the Senate and Rep. Dan Gattis '90 (R-Georgetown) carried it in the House. "We need a strong Texas Guard and a good education system--and this program would provide an important investment in both areas," Gattis said. Gattis also fulfilled a promise he made to nudge the bill through a House committee--he dropped to the floor on the spot and did 20 pushups.
