The Association of Former Students hosted The Next Tradition graduation party May 13-15 at the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center. May graduates, along with family and friends, were invited for door prizes and to learn about their next tradition of being a former student and giving back to Texas A&M. On May 7, The Association partnered with the MSC Aggie Cinema to host a screening of Ferris Bueller's Day Off on the 49-panel Huddleston Video Wall. With the theme of "Leisure Rules," the Aggie Network Study Break provided snacks and a bit of rest for students during finals.
The first history of Texas A&M University on DVD is complete and receiving rave reviews. The 80-minute program tells the story of Texas A&M from its earliest beginnings to the modern day. With hundreds of historic photographs and dozens of interviews, Aggies: The True Story of Texas A&M will help you fall in love all over again with the school "we think so grand." Narrated by Lyle Lovett '79, the program includes exclusive interviews with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Texas Gov. Texas A&M celebrated May graduation with eight ceremonies across the world. Texas A&M University-Qatar held commencement for 52 students on May 6; Texas A&M President Bowen R. Loftin '71 participated in the ceremony. Loftin was also present May 14-15 as the main campus of Texas A&M graduated a record number of students in Reed Arena. The commencement ceremony on May 15 included the commissioning of 89 A&M cadets as officers in the U.S. armed forces. In addition, each service branch conducted separate commissioning ceremonies. Final Review for the College Station cadets was also May 15 at Kyle Field. The commencement convocation on May 13 featured Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in the war against terrorism in the Middle East and Central Asia, as the main speaker. Texas A&M-Galveston held its commencement on May 15.
The economic impact of Texas A&M University and other members of The Texas A&M University System based in and around College Station and Bryan expanded by almost $250 million in 2009 and is now estimated to surpass $3.5 billion annually, an all-time high.
